Dementia Connections Cafés: Support groups for families and carers

4th June 2026 | 4 min read

We established Dementia Connections Cafés to provide families and carers with opportunities to connect in person, share experiences, and support one another in a safe and welcoming environment.

Held in a quiet private dining area within many of our Care Communities, these informal meetups are designed as peer-support networks focused on connection, learning, and sharing solutions to common challenges. Open to all family members and significant others, our Dementia Connections Cafes are particularly valuable for spouses who may experience grief, loneliness, or social isolation as dementia changes the dynamics of their relationship.

Facilitated by a Dementia Care Champion or a member of our Care Community leadership team, each monthly session encourages open conversation while providing practical strategies, reassurance, and emotional support.

How family feedback inspired our Dementia Connections Café initiative

We developed our Dementia Connections Café initiative in response to feedback from attendees of Opal HealthCare's Dementia Care Connections webinar series.

For more than three years, our webinars have provided families with practical information, insights, and tools to better understand dementia and support their loved ones. Families told us they valued the information but also wanted opportunities to discuss what they had learned, ask questions, and connect with others facing similar challenges.

Our Dementia Connections Cafes bridge this gap by transforming learning into meaningful action. They provide a safe space without judgement where families can reflect on their experiences, exchange ideas, and gain confidence from knowing they are not alone in their dementia care journey.

Real-life benefits of dementia support groups

The impact of our Dementia Connections Cafés can be seen in the relationships and support networks that develop among participants.

At Meadow Heights Care Community in Victoria, attendees have reported improvements in their mental health through the friendships and practical support they receive. One spouse shared that members of the group "look out for each other," even arranging visits to loved ones when another family member is unable to attend.

At Aldinga Beach Care Community in South Australia, our monthly Dementia Connections Café welcomes between eight and 15 families and is often held following a Dementia Care Connections webinar.

Family member Margaret says:

"The Dementia Connections Café is great. You can share your experiences, express your feelings, and ask for help. I've learned so much, and I enjoy helping others too. I've encouraged families, especially those new to dementia care, to join our meetups."

Family member Chris has also benefited from attending:

"I've attended these meetups a few times and have found them helpful in improving how I communicate with my mum. It's also been good getting to know senior team members, as well as other families going through similar experiences."

By fostering face-to-face connection and shared understanding, our Dementia Connections Cafés help families feel supported, empowered, and better equipped to navigate the complexities of dementia care.

  • A Dementia Connections Café is a support group for families, carers, and loved ones of people living with dementia. These informal gatherings provide a safe space to share experiences, discuss challenges, learn practical strategies, and connect with others facing similar situations.

  • Dementia support groups can help reduce feelings of isolation, provide emotional support, and offer practical advice from people with lived experience. They also create opportunities for families to learn from one another and develop valuable social connections.

  • For those Care Communities that operate a Dementia Connections Cafés, they are open to family members, spouses, partners, carers, and significant others of residents living with dementia. Anyone seeking support, information, or connection is welcome to participate.

  • Peer support allows families to connect with others who understand the emotional and practical realities of dementia. Sharing experiences can provide reassurance, build confidence, improve wellbeing, and help carers feel less alone in their journey.
