A Bond Beyond Age: The Story of Paul and Grand Paul

At Care Communities across Australia, you’ll find wonderful stories of human connection that unite us. At Blacktown Terrace Care Community in western Sydney, a beautiful friendship goes beyond a shared first name.
For team member Paul, bonding with his meaningful mate, resident Paul (affectionately known as ‘Grand Paul’) has inspired him to strive to make the most of every opportunity life presents. Like many great friendships, the story of our Pauls is built on mutual respect.
“What started as simple "hellos" quickly turned into deep, insightful conversations,” says team member Paul. “Grand Paul is an incredibly kind person who always welcomes me with a warm smile. We share stories about life, and he generously shares memories of his youth and his journey to becoming a successful businessman in Australia.”
For Grand Paul, these life experiences were hard-earned and rewarding.
"I owned and ran an upholstery business,” he says. “When I first opened my business, nobody believed in me. I didn't listen to people who thought my business would fail. I believed in my own potential and my business thrived and I became very successful in my chosen career."
Lessons for life
“His life story is a testament to what hard work, kindness, and respect for others can achieve,” says team member Paul. “He’s taught me that success isn’t just about business, but about how you treat the people around you.”
As Grand Paul shares, our social circles may contract as we age and our need to be heard, understood and valued remain undiminished.
“’Young Paul’, as I call him, has always shown me respect and empathy. Living in aged care can sometimes feel lonely and isolating. Paul is a great listener and makes me feel like my views are important and interesting. I value his friendship and love it when he tells me he appreciates my advice."
After a lifetime of achievement, Grand Paul’s legacy continues in the impact he has on others.
“His wisdom motivates me to work even harder for my own family and to approach my responsibilities with the same diligence and humility he has shown throughout his life,” says team member Paul. “I’m grateful for Grand Paul and the inspiration he provides every single day.”
